Function / Purpose:

A thermal overload relay is a protective device which protects three-phase induction motors against sustained overloads. It measures current in all three phases via bimetallic elements; when the current exceeds the set threshold for long enough, the bimetals heat up, bend, and trip the relay, thereby breaking the circuit (usually via a contactor) to protect the motor from damage.
